What is Adrafinil?

Adrafinil is a eugeroic compound considered to have Nootropic properties. It acts as a wakefulness-promoting agent with stimulant-like effects reducing daytime fatigue and promoting mental energy, attentiveness, focus and mental clarity.

What is Adrafinil?Eugeroics, meaning “good arousal”, are drugs that promote wakefulness and mental alertness but are thought to lack many of the negative side effects that are commonly associated with the use of stimulants.

Marketed as Olmifon (or CRL-40028), Adrafinil was first developed by a French pharmaceutical company Lafon (now named Cephalon) in the late 1970’s as a compound to relieve pain.

During the testing phase, it was not found to be effective for this purpose but did exhibit psychostimulant-like effects that lead to wakefulness in animal trials.

In the late 1980’s, it was used in parts of Europe to promote alertness, wakefulness and as a mood booster in the elderly. During further testing on its mechanisms of action, it was found to be a precursor to Modafinil, converting to this compound in the body.

Modafinil is a eugeroic known today as brand names Provigil, Alertec, Modapro, Modalert and is now an FDA approved pharmaceutical. It is prescribed to reduce daytime fatigue caused by sleeping disorders and has been additionally fictionalized as “The Limitless Pill”. Another growing use for Modafinil in the USA is as a prescription medication for ADHD but unlike Adderall, it does not interfere with sleeping cycles or lead to Dopamine withdrawal.

Once direct synthesis of Modafinil was developed, the production, research and testing of Olmifon was discontinued. Currently, generic Adrafinil, the unregulated prodrug for Modafinil that does not require a prescription to purchase, is widely available online but is not an approved drug to treat or prevent any conditions.

Although the effects of Adrafinil can vary from person to person, individuals who need to stay awake and focused for long periods of time or those that experience daytime sleepiness such as truck drivers, shift workers, entrepreneurs, business owners, housewives and even poker players may benefit greatly from this drug.

This Nootropic has even been reported in user experience logs to be commonly used among students as a tool for optimal productivity for both it’s noted effects on wakefulness and cognitive enhancement.

It is good to note that Modafinil and all compounds with similar chemical structures such as Armodafinil and Adrafinil are banned by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) prohibiting their use by professional athletes due to the perception that they have performance-enhancing effects.

Before considering this smart drug, you may want to know what the main benefits are of Adrafinil, how it works, the side effects and its safety profile and what the difference is between Adrafinil and Modafinil.

Adrafinil Benefits

Although the main benefits of Adrafinil are related to its effectiveness at promoting wakefulness, energy and attentiveness, it is also strongly associated with both cognitive and mood enhancing benefits.

To begin, this compound is known to give you more mental energy and may help increase overall motivation, drive, productivity and faster thought reaction times. However, it does not carry the risk of dependency and for most users, it seems to lack common hyperactive side effects such as anxiousness or rapid heartbeat that are associated with most stimulants.

It may be useful for individuals who suffer from sleep problems or disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia or for those that do not get enough uninterrupted sleep at night, factors that can also lead to hindering the ability to stay awake and alert throughout the day which tends to disrupt the ability to be productive.

In addition to the positive effects on wakefulness and mental energy, Adrafinil has also been associated with several Nootropic benefits. Reviews say this Nootropic enhances the ability to focus effortlessly, encourages greater learning capacity and information retention and boosts productive states making it a popular choice among students and for those that have to work for long periods of time on mentally demanding tasks.

Many user experience logs describe the effects of this Nootropic as a noticeable, smooth energy boost with enhanced focus, increased speed of thought and awareness that feels natural and not uncomfortable.

In addition, this Nootropic agent is believed to promote positive effects on mood. Adrafinil is thought to stimulate Dopamine receptors in the brain, a neurochemical thought to be highly involved in feelings of pleasure and regulating mood. This effect is described by users as promoting feelings of enhanced pleasurestress relief, a heightened sense of motivation and overall well being.

When buying Adrafinil online, it is important to ensure the quality of the product. There are many generic options available that might be a lot less expensive but don’t produce the proper effects. It is suggested to look for GMP certified Adrafinil products.

How Does Adrafinil Work?

While the exact actions of Adrafinil are not fully understood, we do know that when it is metabolized in the liver it converts into Modafinil, a US FDA approved treatment for sleeping disorders (brand name Provigil and others) with effects that are thought to be almost identical.

We are to assume that its mechanisms of action are the same as Modafinil with researchers hypothesizing that the main effect seems to be on elevating the production of hormones and neurotransmitters (histamine, norepinephrine and dopamine) and the effects of Adrafinil on the adrenergic system, the part of the nervous system that releases adrenaline.

Adrafinil is thought to boost adrenergic neurotransmitters in the nervous system, imitating the chemical process the body goes into during “fight or flight mode”, the presence of high stress, danger or overexcitement and replicating the effects of adrenaline release, which boosts energy and alertness, the body’s natural response in defense.

This compound appears to stimulate the hypocretin/orexin system in the brain. Hypocretin is a brain peptide which may be responsible for most of this stimulants potential benefits and regulates alertness, wakefulness and appetite. Deficiencies of hypocretin have been implicated in narcolepsy, a disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness.

When levels of hypocretin are elevated, it is thought to lead to an increase in production and release of hormones and other neurotransmitters such as histamine and norepinephrine, which are directly related to physical and mental energy levels, the ability to stay alert and awake and to pay attention and respond.

Additionally, Adrafinil is thought to hinder the breakdown of Dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in emotional responses and considered “the pleasure center” in the brain. It may also raise the release of Serotonin which may encourage an enhanced mood, reduce stress and regulate sleep.

Finally, it is believed to positively modulate Glutamate receptors by inhibiting the breakdown of this neurotransmitter. This may lead to improvements in neuronal communication which may be responsible for Adrafinil effects on enhancing cognitive functions, boosting the ability to focus and enhancing memory.

The Difference-Adrafinil vs Modafinil

Adrafinil acts as a pro-drug (converts) into the prescriptive compound Modafinil when broken down inside the liver. It is used off-label as a legal alternative that is suggested to have almost identical effects to Modafinil on improving daytime alertness, energy, motivation and mood.

If you are not familiar with Modafinil (brand name Provigil), it is a prescriptive medication (similar to the effects of amphetamines) that promotes wakefulness. It is prescribed to patients with extreme sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder,  obstructive sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders.

Modafinil and Adrafinil are both eugeroic compounds with unique stimulant-like effects, which means, they promote wakefulness and alertness only when stimulation is required. This may result in the effect of sustaining the ability to stay awake without the highs and lows associated with drugs like amphetamines.

Unlike stimulants that target the entire nervous system which may cause hyperactivity, eugeroics do not stimulate motor coordination and are primarily considered cerebral stimulants. Eugeroics are thought to target specific neurotransmitters and receptors in the brain which may lead to a heightened ability to focus and concentrate while keeping you awake, without the mental and physical jitteriness.

Many users have reported the effects of eugeroics as a more smooth boost of energy. This is why Modafinil is popularly sought out for off label use to enhance cognitive performance and productivity by people who do not get enough sleep.

Although it appears that both Modafinil and Adrafinil have similar physiological and psychological effects, the difference may be in how the body processes these compounds.

Modafinil does not need to be converted in the liver since it is thought to be processed mainly in the liver through metabolic activity. This means it requires a much lower dose and works faster than Adrafinil, which is thought to rely greatly on metabolic processes to convert efficiently.

It is believed that Adrafinil generally takes approximately an hour to convert into Modafinil in the liver. However this may depend on the individual metabolic rate and as far as efficacy goes, it can depend on the current health of your liver.

This process of conversion may also pose a greater risk of side effects due to the additional strain on the liver. However, there isn’t enough research to determine which one is safer in the long run.

Finally, there is the legal status. Modafinil requires a prescription to buy it legally in the USA and most other countries. Adrafinil is legal to purchase in the United States without a prescription.

When starting any new Nootropic drug such as Modafinil or Adrafinil, it is best to consult with your doctor first who can advise you on the proper and safe dosage guidelines and determine if these drugs are right for you

In addition, if you are taking these Nootropic drugs off-label, they should be taken on occasion or cycled and not on a daily basis unless advised by your doctor.

Side Effects

Adrafinil has been used safely and effectively by millions of people but can carry the risk of potential side effects ranging from mild to severe, mostly dependent on the frequency of use and dosage amount. However, you should always be well informed about what these risks are before making the decision to use it.

The most common reported side effects are stomach discomfort, nausea, dizziness and headaches. These side effects are suggested to be normally resolved by either lowering the dosage or taking a break.

More serious adverse side effects have been documented with the significant use of Adrafinil with long-term use, related to the build-up of unhealthy enzymes in the liver. If you are taking this supplement on a daily basis, it is a good idea to have your liver monitored.

In addition, higher doses of Adrafinil raises the potential risk of heart problems and high blood pressure. It is important to use this Nootropic drug appropriately and to cycle Adrafinil (2 weeks on, one week off) or only use it on occasion and for short-term use, which is highly recommended, to allow the body to adapt and recover.

If you are healthy and taking Adrafinil within the recommended dosage guidelines on an occasional basis, typically you should not experience any problems.

To reduce the risk of damage to the liver, avoid taking Adrafinil with alcohol, Tylenol or other drugs. As a note, it is suggested that the risk of liver issues when taking Adrafinil are similar to taking Tylenol or aspirin frequently or for long periods of time.

In addition, it is recommended to avoid taking this supplement with other stimulants like caffeine or Adderall. Consult your doctor first before taking this drug to avoid interactions that may occur with any medications you are taking.

In a small number cases, skin conditions including DRESS syndrome and Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been recorded with the use of Modafinil and therefore can be possible when taking Adrafinil. Although occasional use may reduce this risk, it is important to recognize the signs.

It is always recommended to speak with your doctor first before using Adrafinil or other smart drugs to ensure you do not have any pre-existing health conditions before using these products.

Adrafinil Dosage Guidelines

The typical daily dosage of Adrafinil is between 150 mg-300 mg which is widely accepted as a safe and effective dosage range. This is a powerful Nootropic agent and it is recommended to start with a smaller dose before raising the dosage only if needed, in order to give the body a chance to adjust.

The half-life of Adrafinil itself is approximately an hour. This simply means it takes an hour for Adrafinil to convert into Modafinil by the liver, indicating that it should take approximately this amount of time for the effects to kick in. It has been reported that you should typically expect the effects of a single dose of Adrafinil to last between 3 hrs-4 hrs.

It is recommended to take this stimulant on an empty stomach. Additionally, Adrafinil has powerful wakefulness inducing properties and you should avoid taking it too late in the day to ensure it doesn’t disrupt your ability to fall asleep.

This Nootropic is known to have a very bitter taste and it is recommended to take it in capsules or tablets. However, Adrafinil is water-soluble and for users who want to administer this compound in powder form, it is suggested to take it with orange juice to mask the taste.

This supplement is not recommended for long-term use and has been known to raise the level of certain enzymes that may lead to liver damage. If you are planning to use Adrafinil on a long-term basis, it is highly advised to be monitored and under the care of a medical professional.

Adrafinil Review

Adrafinil is a useful smart drug that can offer the user increased wakefulness and alertness while enhancing mental performance, mood and motivation without the common adverse side effects of other stimulants.

Many users describe the experience of Adrafinil as positively enhancing their ability to be productive and focused, which is similarly attained when taking the prescriptive drug Modafinil. However, Adrafinil is legal to buy and use in the USA, Canada and the UK as well as most other countries without a prescription.

The benefits of Adrafinil can be achieved within an hour of ingestion and last for several hours. It is recommended to start at the lowest dose of 100 mg-150 mg and to not exceed 300 mg per day.

Adrafinil poses some potential side effects on the liver and therefore should be used on an occasional basis as opposed to daily use.
